Ultraviolet (or "UV") light, which comes from the sun, is known to contribute to serious eye problems such as macular degeneration, cataract, pterygium and even eyelid and ocular cancers.
Here in the tropics, a good pair of sunglasses is a must, especially for people with light complexions. At Marianas Eye Institute you'll find ultraviolet blocking sunglasses in all price ranges including special polarized lenses and best brands like Ray Ban and Salvatore Ferragamo. Come in and take a look, and protect your eyes from the harmful rays of the sun.
Sunglasses vary in two main areas the amount of UV light they block and the optical quality of the lenses. UV light comes in three wavelengths: UVA, UVB and UVC. UVC does not reach the earth, so we don't have to worry about it. UVA has a wavelength of 315-380 nm, while UVB has a wavelength of 290-315 nm. You want to make sure your sunglasses are marked UV 400, which means that they block all wavelengths under 400 nm. All decent pair of sunglasses do this, and they may be as inexpensive as $10-20. Higher quality lenses have higher optical characteristics or clarity so that you can see without distortions.
We encourage everyone to wear some form of UV protection, preferably, high quality lenses that block both UVA and UVB light. You can get them at many places on the island and we have a broad selection and knowledgeable and friendly staff to help you.
